For steam train enthusiasts, young or old, spend a day at Bressingham, it’s a great family adventure. Whether you stand in awe of the huge steam engines in their locomotive sheds, take a trip on one of the three narrow gauge passenger railways or pulling levers in an original signal box, there is so much to see and do here, and thankfully, no sign of Thomas (although hubby’s little face dropped).

But one thing is certain, no matter your age, take a ride on the fabulous historic steam Victorian Gallopers (a merry-go-round to you or me). Experience the thrill sitting astride a brightly decorated horse, each individually named and accompanied by nostalgic organ music. For the grandchildren, Sarah and Jessica, this was the highlight of their day, with as many rides as their heart desired, or their stomach could cope with.

Along with 17 acres of beautiful gardens, (although the month we visited the flower beds were still in winter mode), children’s play areas, an ice cream seller and a café with plenty of picnic benches, but for me the highlight was the Dad’s Army display in the museum. A full-sized street scene depicting the main street of Walmington-on-Sea with shops, vintage vehicles, traction engines and even an Anderson Shelter. I wouldn’t have been surprised to hear Captain Mainwaring shouting ‘You stupid boy Pike’. The museum is also home to a full-size travelling Post Office carriage and last but not least, the traditional sweetie shop (with candy stripped paper bags) mmm very yummy.

Opened to the public more than 60 years ago, it has gone from strength to strength, with venue hire offered for weddings, fayres and events planned throughout the year, including fire engine and car rallies and model railway shows. Step back in time with events showcasing the 1940’s, live bands and even birthday parties.

Not forgetting the obligatory gift shop to wander through, accessible toilets and a large garden centre next door along with ample free parking. We found booking on line was easier with offers and price deals available. Plan a visit to Santa’s Grotto this Christmas, but get in early and check the website.

Hope you enjoy yourselves as much as we all did.
