Appleby-in-Westmoreland, Cumbria

Croft Ends is a beautifully kept site with sheep grazing on all sides. The owners Val & Andrew are lovely and so helpful, we thoroughly recommend staying here. Two days after Storm Arwen when snow enveloped Cumbria and the beautiful Pennines, we decided on a walk along the ‘Roman Road’ just a few yards from the site, we were actually grateful for the frozen earth, otherwise we felt a ‘Vicar of Dibley’ moment could have occurred. Following the path we crossed through several gates coming to a farm with the field guarded by a small herd of geese, who upon seeing us began honking and hissing extremely loud and began charging like an organised military offensive. Even my attempt at lobbing a snowball at the leader didn’t deter them, it only seemed to anger them even more! But in the end I plucked up the courage, squared my shoulders and tried to make myself look even bigger and climbed over the stile, forging the way ahead for my wimpy husband!
Not a bad view to wake up to!

After several months of being looked after by Val & Andrew we are moving on – and very sad to leave. It has been a joy staying here and we both look forward to coming back. The surrounding countryside is wonderful and the market town of Appleby is a joy, with wonderful eateries, pubs, market stalls on Saturdays, in fact everything you need, with Penrith only 15 minutes drive away. A joy. Thank you Val & Andrew.
