Eastleigh, Hampshire

Approximately six miles from Southampton brings you to the quaint, picturesque village of Hamble. Mentioned as early as 720AD this historic community has a long history of maritime activity, being a major centre in the 13th and 14th centuries and its location on the river Hamble made it a natural place for smuggling. During WW2 the area was famous for being an aircraft training centre. Some of the outstanding houses in the old part of the hamlet date back several centuries.

But now, with three marinas, it’s a popular yachting location drawing people from around the world. It hosts races, events along with celebrations and in the summer it’s a busy and bustling area with its cobbled streets, great pubs and eateries including Thai, Italian and bistro cafes. If you are wondering about the name ‘le-rice’ its from the Norman French meaning ‘on a hill’, obviously.

We parked in the main square, with its independent shops and Co-op, then walked down to the waterfront. The view is breath-taking, with so many yachts and boats including a small ferry that operates daily across the river to Warsash which houses a maritime academy.
Hubby and I had lunch at the Beach Hut café which overlooks the water with all its boating activity. Seating is available Inside and outside, along with a fantastic upstairs veranda. The café is well stocked offering breakfasts, lunch and scrummy cakes, along with ice-cream and is fully licensed. The friendly staff really couldn’t do enough to help, definitely recommended.

Nearby brings you to many beautiful rural attractions including Manor Farm Country Park, Netley Abbey and the Royal Victoria Country Park.
A very pleasant afternoon trip.
